LUTHER BADMAN KEITH WINS 2007 DETROIT MUSIC AWARD; HONORED AS OUTSTANDING BLUES SONGWRITER

DETROIT— Bluesman Luther Badman Keith recently won his first Detroit Music Award after his fourth nomination.

Motor City Music Foundation voters, who make the Detroit Music Awards nominations, made Keith the winner for 2007 in the Outstanding Blues/R&B Songwriter category. Keith, a former professinal journalist, has previously been nominated twice for Outstanding Blues Band, in 2004 and 2005, and once for Outstanding Blues Recording for Thunder In My Blues, released in 2003. The band won the 2005 Detroit Blues Challenge and represented Detroit in the 2006 in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.

”It’s a real honor for myself and my band who bring my songs to life,” Keith said. “It was great to be nominated, but to win is really something special. It was an outstanding field of songwriters so I feel I am in great company, particulary to be recognized by those who follow the music scene in Detroit.”

Other nominees for the songwriting award included Paul Miles, who in the Outstanding Acoustic/folk artist category, Chris Canas, Kate Hart, Chef Chris, Rusty Wright and Stacie Petrie.

Keith has won acclaim for the often tongue-in-cheek humor in his songs as well as incorporating elements of rock, soul and funk into his arrangements. “Luther brings something of his own to each of his original songs,” said longtime fan Rodney Guyton of Detroit, who heads the Luther Badman Keith Fan Club. “Some of my favorites are Barbecue Baby, Six Figure Salary and Home Alone. His lyrics are always a treat and a surprise to people who hears him for the first time. I'm glad to see him get this well deserved recognition.

"I'm really looking forward to the new songs that will be on his next CD."
Roger Dietrich, another fan of Keith's songwriter, said, "It's great to see that Luther won. Audiences really love his songs. My favorite is Six Figure Salary and I also really like Gonna Give Up Drinking. Dietrich, a blues performer himself, has performed some of Keith's song with his own band. "I get a great reaction from the crowd each time," said Dietrich, a harmonica player and vocalist. "I hope this award gets more people to pay attention to Luther's music, not just in Detroit, but around the country."
